Live streaming from Comic Con 2013, the new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer debuted, introducing a new villain in Copperhead. Poised for an October 2013 release date, Arkham Origins was initially displayed to the public at E3, where it received two nominations from the Game Critics Awards for Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Console Game.

Arkham Origins is a prequel to the popular Batman: Arkham Asylum, taking place five years prior. It follows a younger, unrefined Batman as he attempts to save Gotham City from the hands of brutal assassins. Those assassins, however, turn their sights on the caped crusader on Christmas Eve at the beck and call of their mob boss. Now, Batman must take them on, as well as the mysterious Copperhead who, assumably, injects Batman with some kind of poison as seen at the end of the cryptic trailer.

Gameplay improvements include a fast travel system, allowing Batman to remotely summon his Batwing plane to transport him to other areas of the game world quicker than gliding or grappling allows. Subplot assignments include the likes of Batman being able to assist the Gotham City Police Department to improve his reputation through rescuing police officers from a gang or preventing an informant being thrown to his death, for example.

The real draw, though, looks to be in terms of Batman’s detective features. Users can now scan a crime scene using his detective vision, view virtual recreations of the scene from different angles in the Batcave, and once a crime is solved, the player is shown a Batman-narrated rundown of the crime.

Look for a few familiar characters to cause havoc throughout Gotham with Copperhead including The Joker, The Penguin, Bane, Black Mask, Deathstroke, Anarky, and Falcone, and the corrupt Commissioner Loeb.
