The official trailer for True Detective, the upcoming miniseries by premium cable juggernaut HBO, has been released and has the internet buzzing. Though the series won’t hit the airwaves until January 2014, the clip gives some insight into what the 8-episode show has to offer including starring roles by two-time Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson and certified badass Matthew McConaughey.

According to movie aggregator site IMDBTrue Detective is about “Two detectives’, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, lives become entangled during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.”

More specifically, the show depicts the aftermath of a 1995 unsolved murder that rattles a small, rural Louisiana town. Supposedly, HBO utilizes multiple storylines and character perspectives to tell the story after the case is reopened in 2012, a long 17 years after the murder took place, or so says Deadline.

HBO has a penchant for producing upper-echelon dramas that not only portray the atrocities afforded by the hand of man, but also provides a deep insight into the psyche of the characters involved––think The Wire, The Sopranos, or most recently Game of Thrones. While centering on a 17-year old murder, True Detective looks to delve deep into the minds of both Harrelson’s and McConaughey’s respective characters, sure to show both how they cope with investigating heinous crimes and how they temper (or not) that certain obsessive police instinct that keeps engaged with the case no matter what.

The series was written and created by newcomer Nic Pizzolatto, who has virtually no film credits to his name, and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre), another relative unknown with two directorial nods under his belt who’s also signed on to direct a remake of the already adapted novel by Stephen King, It.

There’s no word yet on the exact date True Detective will grace HBO’s airwaves but January 2014 is the general timeframe. Be sure to take a look at the trailer above and let us know what you think of the series and how it will fare in comparison to HBO’s other acclaimed dramas.
