Chances are when you think of Tom Hanks, your first thought isn’t humor. You probably remember his Oscar winning roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, his Oscar nominated roles in Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away, or his voice from the Toy Story franchise. But Hanks appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night and performed a slam poem about the 90s sitcom Full House.

Hanks channeled his inner beatnik and took to the stage by himself, reciting the comedic poem while donning a black turtleneck sweater under a single spotlight.

Though Hanks secured his superstar status by taking on dramatic roles, he started out in comedies such as Dragnet, Big (for which he was nominated an Oscar), and The ‘Burbs. In the early 90s he starred opposite Meg Ryan in the romantic comedies Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail.

Let’s not forget his memorable performances on the popular sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (8 appearances). He became a part of the “5-Timers Club,” which as the name suggests is when one is chosen to host the show five times, in 1990 joining the likes of funnymen Chevy Chase, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin.

Another funny but accidental gaffe involving Hanks took place last Friday during an interview on Good Morning America. In an interview with Savannah Guthrie to promote his upcoming flick Cloud Atlas, Hanks dropped an untimely F-Bomb when asked by Guthrie to put on an accent he supposedly uses in the film. Of course, Good Morning America airs live and nationally so once the bomb was dropped, there was no bleeping it out. Naturally he was mortified, apologizing to the national audience profusely and making light of the situation. Cloud Atlas will be released on October 26.
