Summer has come and gone but the current temperatures outside would beg to differ. The thermostat this weekend in Massachusetts will stay around the 60 to 70 degree temp mark, making it the perfect weekend to treat yourself to a last minute getaway. Where to go? Save the apple-picking for the sweater weather and drive up to New England’s oh so charming and picturesque coastal town: Newburyport.

Below are some recommendations to get your planning started.

How to Get There:

You can rent a Zipcar and drive. Or from North Station, take the commuter rail out on the Newburyport Line.

Stay Here:

The Garrison Inn Boutique Hotel  If you’re looking for luxury on a small scale, then check out the charming Garrison Inn this weekend. The hotel is centrally located in the heart of Newburyport and overlooks Brown Square Park. At the time of publication, it also had availability this weekend. So, reserve your one—or dare I say two—night stay now!

Go Here:

The Annual Newburyport Cocktail Competition — If you’re in Newburyport this weekend, then make your way downtown for a battle of the bartenders. The best mixologists in the area will be creating their signature cocktails for everyone to taste. Buy your tickets and you’ll get to be the judge of this fun tasting competition which includes food pairings. The event will take place in multiple restaurants in the downtown area, all within walking distance of each other.

Newburyport Brewing Company — This 23-barrel, three-vessel brewhouse is Massachusetts’ only all-can and keg craft brewery. And, luckily, your designated driver won’t have to go far, because it’s located just one mile outside of downtown Newburyport. If you arrive this weekend, you’ll be there just in time for the brewery’s tasting room hours, which are Friday, 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. Give them a call or email info@nbptbrewing.com to reserve your guided tour now.

Doggie Paw-rade! — Starting at 10 a.m. this Saturday in Newburyport, you can watch or walk dogs through the town and, according to the event description, there will be “contests, treats and prizes.” I’m not sure if you’d want to spend the better part of your day here, but it certainly could be a fun event to check out as you explore the town.

Sisters We Three — If you’re feeling artsy then wander on down to this cute artisan shop featuring handmade items and artwork—all created by the hands of artistic New Englanders. They sell everything from paintings and pottery to jewelry and lotions.

Eat and Drink Here:

Caffe Di Sienna  If you’re in the mood for coffee and some tiramisu, head to this cute little cafe located at 33 Pleasant Street. It’s cozy and comfortable—just make sure you bring your cash.

Brine  This classic self-described “hip and energetic” oyster bar also offers quite an extensive and inventive menu. According to the restaurant, you can “chose from a daily smorgasbord of Ceviche, Crudo — fresh Bivalves, Tartare, Sashimi, Carpaccio — Cotton, Brandade, and Espumas in addition to select prime cuts and butchered chops.” Oh my!

Anchor Stone Deck Pizza — Hailed by many as the best pizza in Newburyport, I would recommend this place if you’re in the mood for something fast. You can order a slice or a pie depending on how hungry you are this Saturday. In addition, the restaurant offers an extensive list of toppings—everything from chorizo to herb-roasted seasonal veggies. Yum.
