On Wednesday morning, a Boston Police officer patrolling in Jamaica Plain responded to shots fired near 891 Centre Street. Kenny Lamour, 21, of Hyde Park, was fatally shot and pronounced deceased on the scene, according to the BPD.

The police proceeded to chase two suspects on foot, one of whom brandished a firearm at the officer and 18-year old Joshiah Zachery, also of Hyde Park, was subsequently captured and brought into custody.

Zachery is charged with Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon on a Police Officer. He was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, Zachery was described as “having a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt” and upon capture was “carrying a black and yellow snow shovel and told detectives that he had been using it all morning to help residents of several neighborhoods.”

It’s unclear at this time what the motivation behind the murder of Lamour is.

According to Jamaica Plain News, Lamour was a part of Roca Inc., an organization that aims to help poverty-stricken and at-risk youths including those previously involved in crime.

The Boston Globe reports that Lamour was out in the community shoveling snow as part of the program’s outreach. The Globe notes that this is the first time in Roca’s history that a member of its program was killed on the job.

Zachery is scheduled to appear in court again on March 12.
