Fashion blogging is no easy business – regardless of how impeccable your style may be, it’s all too possibly you’ll get lost in the sea of fellow fashionistas on the web. But here in Boston, one blogger has carved out an impressive corner of the web through which she can relay her lifestyle in the city.

Jessye Aibel is the blogger behind CityTonic, and when she’s not creating posts about her current outfit obsessions, events, and more, she’s a senior designer and art director for T.J.Maxx. So not only is Aibel using her blog as an outlet for self-expression and inspiration, but she’s also honing her skills as a designer.

Naturally, Aibel’s closet is one worth digging through – she’s worked with brands like PIOL, Furla and Lou & Grey – at least, virtually. We asked her for a peek into her wardrobe, and she delivered. But before we take a look, Aibel provided some insight to her personal style.

How would you describe your personal style?

I like to think of my personal style as bold, fresh and pretty colorful. At this point, I know what works best for me but I don’t feel at all limited by that – I’m still willing to try new trends (though I usually try to put my own spin on them). When I shop, I don’t really buy things with a specific outfit or purpose in mind (I rarely ask myself: “where/when/with what can I wear this?”) and instead fill my closet with a lot of the bolder, unusual pieces that catch my eye. Totally impractical, I know. But I don’t worry about whether or not something will get enough wear — it always does – mostly because I love dressing creatively and mixing prints, textures and trends.

Where do you love to shop?

Since I work for T.J.Maxx, I definitely spend a lot of time shopping there. I’ve found some amazing stuff (most recently: a sequined Parker dress and Saint Laurent clutch in the clearance section). Plus, I always think purchases are more rewarding when you put a little time and energy into the search! I also love to shop the usual spots: Zara, J.Crew, Madewell, Anthropologie, etc. Most of my “investment” pieces (handbags and shoes) are pre-owned – from either The Real Real or Fashionphile. Although I do shop impulsively most of the time, I make an exception when it comes to bigger purchases – those ones definitely deserve more thought and research.

What are your must-have staple items for a great wardrobe?

My staple items include: a super soft, well-worn chambray button-down, a leather jacket for adding instant cool to any outfit, and a flattering pair of black skinny jeans (definitely an essential for both lazy mornings and evenings out). I’m also crazy about shoes, so I consider a great pair of metallic gold or leopard pumps to be a staple. Both can be worn like a neutral and will help elevate any outfit (much more than a standard nude or black pump will).

What up and coming trend pieces do you currently own or have your eye on?

Since we’re inching closer to winter in Boston, I’ve been looking for a few pieces to keep me warm (and stylish) in colder weather – like a classic coat in a pretty pastel and a pair of grey suede over-the-knee boots. It tends to get a little dreary here during the winter, so I also like to wear color whenever possible. It helps brighten my mood. At the moment, I’m on the hunt for a pair of emerald green suede pumps and a bright cross-body bag to get me through the next few months!
