The answer may be “yes,” but I’m skeptical. A recent study evaluated just how much digital engagement it really takes to fall in love. Sounds bizarre, but United Kingdom-based electronics retailer Pixmania conducted the study by analyzing people’s activity via Facebook, Twitter, text messages, emails and phone calls to see just how quickly “kids these days” go from courting to coupledom.

Take a look at the digital data:

Well, all of this social media dating news seems great, but are people falling in love online, staying in love offline? I was interested to find out, so I went digging. And—thankfully, for all of you singles online—I did find a study proving you’re all on the right track. USA TODAY reported this summer that “based on a survey of more than 19,000 individuals who married between 2005 and 2012, … [the] relationships that began online are slightly happier and less likely to split than those that started offline.” Interesting.

And Caitlin Modvay, a dating industry senior analyst for market research firm IBISWorld, stated that “societally, we are going to increasingly meet more of our romantic partners online as we establish more of an online presence in terms of social media,” which explains why more people are meeting faster and more likely to find Mr. or Mrs. Right.

The University of Chicago also examined the survey and concluded that “online couples have happier, longer marriages.” The journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “put the percentage of married couples that now meet online at almost 35 percent.” Not bad.

This should all be music to your ears. You can throw that ‘three-day rule’ out the window. Looking at the chart above, it’s clear to me that people aren’t waiting by the phone hoping to receive a follow-up call from last night’s date. No, instead, the new dating motto seems to be: If at first you don’t succeed, try try again (like the next second).

All it takes, is for a single to log online, sign up for one of the hundreds of dating sites out there and find someone “compatible” almost immediately. Or, if mobile dating is more your style, Hinge and Tinder make dating simple, quick and efficient. With all of this digital engagement going on, it looks like Cupid might be out of a job soon.
