For the second year in a row, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal was eliminated from Wimbledon, this time in the first round, being upset by Steve Darcis who is ranked no. 135 in the world. Having just won the French Open in early June, Nadal appeared to struggle constantly having been nuring a knee injury that’s plagued him since taking Roland Garros.

Watch Steve Darcis’s winning shot to eliminate Rafael Nadal in the first round of Wimbledon and him speaking to the press:

Nadal’s defeat today is “the first first-round loss in a major for the two-time Wimbledon champion, who was 34-0 entering the match,” according to USA Today. The Spain native was riding a 22-match win streak, boasting a 43-2 record on the year, before being ousted by Darcis. Out of the nine major events he participated in this year, Nadal made it to the finals of all of them.

Coming into Wimbledon, the 27-year old was given the number 5 seed despite his clay court victory in France. Many expected his rise through the tournament to give way to a rematch of perpetual foe and Switzerland native Rodger Federer.

Belgian Steve Darcis, was mobbed by reporters after his underdog win and was prompted by ESPN if Nadal’s nagging knee injury had anything to do with his unlikely advancement through the tournament. He said, quite humbly, “I think if you start to focus on him, it’s tougher. I tried to focus on myself.”

Darcis has won two titles and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 44 on May 12, 2008. Since then, he’s won two ATP titles but will likely be remembered by his David-like slaying of the Goliath Nadal. He aptly became the first player ever to defeat Nadal in the first round of any grand slam

Meanwhile, heated rival Federer cruised to an easy victory opening the tournament on Centre Court he systematically dismantled Romania’s Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 in just 68 minutes, according to the AP.
