Social media is most often used by brands to engage with fans, build an audience, conduct research and even generate sales, but it rarely is mentioned in terms of SEO (search engine optimization). As social and search simultaneously evolve, they are melding together more and more. Many profiles and content are beginning to rank in search results, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and many others.

As search results and social media collide, it is becoming more important to integrate your search tactics into other areas, especially social. Here are some reasons why:

  • Google loves fresh content. Regularly creating and publishing new content on a website (besides a blog) is very difficult to do, and static pages will decrease in ranking over time. Social networks allow you to post new, keyword rich content every day.
  • Dominate digital shelf space. Google does not want to have all first page results come from the same URL, so owning social properties to fill in around your brand name will push competitors or miscellaneous URL’s off of the first page of your brand name results.
  • Get relevant content to your audience. Besides fresh content, Google also strong takes into account relevancy. Social networks allow you to take advantage of trends that cause an uptick in searches by pushing out keyword rich content around whatever is hot, allowing social posts to rank where Web pages could not.

Every brand wants to dominate search engine results for their name, as well as relevant keywords so they can claim as much digital shelf space as possible. Optimizing your Web site is an integral part of this, but an increasingly large part of search engine results are being given to social signals (profiles, posts, media, etc).
