Leadership is an essential skill in the modern workplace for those working in corporate life or on the next big startup. I think it is important to lead by doing, instead of lead by demanding.

Here are a few tips to improve your leadership skills:

i. Think horizontal, not hierarchical

Be willing to work with employees to solve problems and stay goal oriented. 

ii. Encourage innovation and critical feedback

Nobody has a better idea of day-to-day operations than your employees. Encourage them to get involved and share ideas and feedback to improve quality and efficiency.

iii. Focus on teamwork and collaboration, build a community

 “The whole is more than the sum of its parts”

iv. Remain malleable

Meeting deliverables is always the top priority. Things happen, circumstances change… You need to be able to work in a fast-changing environment while remaining confident and on task

v. Diversity is key

Don’t hire a team of people just like you. There are thought leaders, role players and other types of individuals that will collectively work together most effectively when everyone fits a given position.
