“The world has officially gone digital and the job market is no different. To land a job, it really does matter how you are viewed based on your virtual presence; and you better look good. My job hunt, post graduation, has allowed me the opportunity to figure out this whole process and to try to ascertain how it works. I would like to share some of the knowledge I have gathered – here are some useful tips to help you become a standout candidate.”

Evan’s 5 Steps to Success:

1. Get involved! Make sure you are participating in as many on-campus events and organizations as your schedule will allow. Not only does this look fantastic on your resume, it’s also a great way to make friends and network.

2. Volunteer! Give back to your community. In the future, it will give back to you. Plus, it’s another great way to network. Volunteering equates to work hours which helps to level the playing field, and may give you access to people in key hiring positions.

3. Raise your grades! High grades make you eligible for prestigious academic awards. Any college honor will help you to stand out. If you lack work experience, as most recent grads do, a competitive GPA will look excellent on a resume. The best formula to make good grades, and accomplish Steps 1 and 2, is finding the right balance of school and extracurriculars that work for you. Don’t over extend yourself, and remember school comes first.

4. Don’t post it or just block it! Many employers will look at a candidate’s social media accounts. Be smart – live in the moment – enjoy your fun iPhone free. Know that your digital persona is as important as your human one. Employers use LinkedIn and other social sites to help evaluate a prospective candidate. Keep your LinkedIn updated and professional!

5. Keep it professional! Emails such as LilSweetieXOXO@immature.com and Supersufer4000@tween.com are not acceptable email addresses to give to prospective employers. Time to upgrade. Create an address using your name, i.e.firstname.lastname@gmail.com.
