The International, a Dota 2 e-sports competition known as the Super Bowl of the gaming world, has broken its own record for the largest prize pool in a gaming event. With prize money at a staggering $11.4 million and rising, The International has eclipsed the $10.9 million mark it set last year.

The funding includes a $1.6 million contribution from Valve, the game’s developer, but the vast majority originated from the purchase of special in-game items by Dota 2 players themselves. Valve estimates that the pot should break the $15 million mark before the competition.

The event, which will be held August 3-8 at KeyArena in Seattle, will play host to 10,000 attendees after tickets sold out online in less than 10 minutes. The competition will also likely make an appearance in the homes of millions of online viewers, as last year’s competition attracted more than 20 million unique viewers and over 2 million peak concurrent viewers, more than doubling its numbers from 2013.

But for those of you thinking about quitting your day job and picking up a controller to make a lucrative and glamorous living in professional gaming, you may want to think again. Events like The International are far from the norm in gaming competitions, especially for Dota 2. In fact, The International is really the only event of its kind, representing a huge spike in both publicity and prize money in the Dota 2 Schedule. Though some pro gamers can make as much as a million bucks a year, the hard truth is that only the top 114 Dota 2 players make salaries above the U.S. poverty line.

So feel free to sit back, relax and watch the best professional gamers duke it out for an absurd prize at The International, but maybe think twice before picking up the sticks to try and make a living yourself.
