I think we need to provide all students with some coursework on entrepreneurship, but for journalists today it is especially essential. From freelancing to blogging, there are plenty of ways modern day writers are able to pay the bills while covering topics they’re passionate about. Similar to medical schools and law programs, journalism programs should consider the fact that many graduates have a great opportunity to pursue a career working for themselves if provided the proper tools and resources.

Cont3nt.com is a great example of how content sharing is shifting as we enter into 2014. They provide freelance journalists the tools they need to succeed, and encourage them to continue building an independent brand. As the market trends continue to change, I think it is necessary for educators and institutions to consider the effects when putting into place new, empowering programming for rising journalism students.

A recent Twitter chat discussed teaching entrepreneurship in journalism programs.
