As 20 somethings began pouring into the district, the idea of a group house was born. If you are on a tight budget and moving to DC solo, here is a guide to DC’s group houses.

 Dudes in a house

If you are looking for an extension of college, this is it. You don’t know how they do it but dudes manage to cram themselves into every possible room- office, den, sunroom, it doesn’t matter. Behind every door is a dude. Sometimes they all move into together but most of time they lose one along the way and a room gets filled by a poor random outsider. These houses are great for a party but not great for general habitation. In a city where so many people live in apartments and bars are expensive, the potential house party is in high demand. This means the place is always trashed and everyone is always hungover. Just like college right?

Strangers in a house

If you are just looking to get a roof over your head, this is the place for you. The weird thing about these houses is that no one really knows each other. There is always one person who is never home. However, this is overshadowed by the one person who always has their boyfriend/girlfriend over. These houses can be co-ed and no one usually stays for very long. It essentially functions as a mini apartment building. The nice thing is you can come and go as you please, just don’t expect to make any life long friends.

Ladies in a house

This is another extension of a college. If you are looking to live with all girls, prepare yourself. The house will likely be immaculate and wonderfully decorated. Likely all of the girls will be really nice. The hard part will be getting in. Sound familiar? Getting into an all girls group house is eerily similar to sorority recruitment. You along with a bunch of other girls will answer the same ad and get grilled but not just one, but probably all the girls. Good luck!
