Whether you’re leaving an internship or you’re well into your career, its always important to leave a lasting impression on employers. Here’s a few pointers for how you can stand out at your job:

9. Know Where You Work

Oscar Wilde once said, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” This applies to your job. By knowing where you work (for example, knowing your employer’s mission and vision statements), you will be able to quickly grow accustomed to the culture of the workplace. Some good places to look are the company’s website, newsletters, employer’s social media accounts, etc.

8. Dress to Impress

You don’t want to look like a college bum at work. Always remember that all eyes are on you so dress the part properly.

7. Be Confident

Show (don’t tell) what you know but don’t try too hard. Relax, smile, and don’t be afraid.

6. Ask Questions

So many of us forget that it is okay to ask questions. By asking questions you are showing your employers that you attentive and willing to engage. Now just remember to really listen to the answers.

5. Give Thanks

By being personable in the workplace, people in your workplace will get to know you better and quicker. Make sure to thank those who help you get accustomed to the workplace.

4. Get to Know Your Coworkers

By getting to know whom you’re working with, you can become a part of the team. On every team, there are different types of people. Get to know people so that you know where to go for answers.

3. Be a Sponge

Take notes. Remember to absorb what you are learning. Remember names of other coworkers. You are there to acquire new skills so make sure to take everything in. Taking notes will allow you to remember specific details. It’s the little things that count.

2. Volunteer

Be willing to take initiative. Raise your hand to do chores like cleaning up the lunchroom once a week. By showing your employers that you are willing to take on new responsibility, they will realize that you are serious about your job.

1. Be Punctual

Show up to the office 15 minutes early. Leaving late never hurts either.
