Forget everything you know about the average “9-5”

The bottom line is that progress has to be made and deadlines have to be reached. Problems will come up at all hours of the night and day, budgets will be tight, resources will be limited. Remain malleable, go with the flow and always offer to help wherever possible.

Stay positive and self-motivated

High paced environments can often lead to stressful situations or burdening road blocks. Don’t let that get you down. Positive thinking really does bring positive results, and your bits of energy can be a motivating factor to members of your team.

Assimilate to the company culture

Startups often have a tight nit group of founding members and dedicated employees. Get hip with their ways of thinking and go all in!

Always be prepared

In addition to having laptop and phone chargers handy, you always have to be ready to answer any questions about your product or service, especially those relating to your exact position. Do your research and be able to speak with purpose in staff or client meetings.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions or  offer creative insight

Remember that you are there to help in company efforts and learn about the job. It is much more costly for you to do something wrong because you didn’t ask as opposed to taking the time to ensure you can clearly communicate given expectations. Don’t be afraid to offer insight if you have an idea or suggestion, just do so respectfully in the appropriate setting.

Follow guidelines and set deliverables

Any chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link. Don’t be that link. In order for startups to remain on task benchmarks and deadlines have to be met efficiently. Make sure you understand your expectations and think of ways you can go above and beyond to help more.
