There is no question that the under and unemployment rate is a looming issue Millennial’s are nowhere near overcoming. Employers might blame lazy grads; grads may blame lazy institutions or a crappy job market. The fact of the matter is that finding a scapegoat won’t help anyone pay rent or hop on a successful path to career bliss. It is important to say “NO!” to unemployment. Millennial’s are problem solvers with access to information and technology – saying no to unemployment can be a strategic step for many.

Remember, the market rewards action!

Some things you can do while on the job hunt or taking classes:

Freelance or pursue entrepreneurial interests – you can add some experience to your resume, show off your skills while gaining professional contacts, and work around your part-time job or interview schedule.

Volunteer or intern – Get involved with the community by offering up your most valuable commodity – your time. Add some notches to your belt and take advantage of the fact that 80% of employers choose to hire candidates with relevant experience in a given field.

Network and brainstorm – Talk about ideas and interests relevant to your career field with peers and professionals. Interact in chats online, discuss in person at events or seminars, and stay actively involved in all topics related to your field.

Do favors and take chances – Give a little, get a little. Doing that favor might be the difference between landing an interview or spending another afternoon browsing job sites. Put yourself out there in a positive light and carefully show off your skills and abilities.

Utilize any and all resume alternatives – This is 2014… Grads have been hired from promoted Twitter posts, viral videos, and plenty of resume alternatives. Get creative and find a unique way to impress your dream employer. Why not!?
