After a disappointing hoverboard hoax and a working model that looks more like something a cable guy would install than a skateboard, Lexus has teased a hoverboard that replicates the sleek design and functionality promised in Back to the Future 2.

As part of its “Amazing in Motion” video series, Lexus has presented the Lexus Hoverboard, an elegant, floating skateboard made with a Lexus grille and natural bamboo that features the iconic Lexus logo. The video shows the board floating and smoking, but tech fans will have to wait to see anyone actually riding it.

According to Gizmodo, the Hoverboard has been in development for 18 months and is currently being tested by a professional skateboarder in Barcelona.

Hoverboard enthusiasts were understandably excited after watching Lexus’s video, which appeared to feature the board floating on a non-metallic surface at a skate park. This would mean that, unlike many recent attempts at hover boards, the Lexus board could function anywhere.

However, Lexus later revealed that the park had a metallic surface underneath, and that the board uses magnetic levitation, with liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, meaning it will only be functional on metal.

But even though you won’t be able to use the Lexus hover board to skip out on the recently catastrophic DC metro, it’s still pretty cool. A floating skateboard is a floating skateboard, and the world is full of metallic surfaces where you can try it (think Gateway Arch).

Lexus says they’ll be providing new info on the “real, rideable hoverboard” soon, but until then, you can salivate over this teaser video:
