Experience as an employer and an unpaid intern

  Background: Kominsky currently works at the U.S. House of Representatives & U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform advising committee members on legal, regulatory, and policy matters related to technology/cyber space; privacy; data security. Simultaneously he is tasked with Developing strategy for issues related to national security & foreign affairs; technology/new media; and related issues in the financial sector.

He was responsible for project management and performed key investigative roles in major Congressional investigations, including: the financial crisis of 2008; the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Stimulus); Fast & Furious; Attack on U.S. Diplomatic Post in Libya, and more.

 Professor, teaches a class specifically on Internships  

Background: 

 Scott Talan, MPA, is a full-time professor of Public Communication. He has worked in media, PR, and communications in four distinct fields: TV News, Politics, Nonprofits, and Higher Education. Scott worked at the United Nations, Harvard University and the New Mexico Legislature. He recently served as the Director of Communications for the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs.

Talan has worked as a writer at ABC News Good Morning America. He’s also reported on-air for local TV news stations in several states (Florida, New Mexico, California) covering politics including the 2000 presidential recount story.

Experience as an intern and employer 

Background:

founder of LEAF (college savings program/website), former trader for Goldman Sachs, GWU undergrad, UVA business school, experience as an intern and employer. Duffus is the CFO for Spectrum Bridge, the global leader in TV White Space and database that managed wireless networking solutions. Prior to Spectrum Bridge, he was the deputy CEO of Finance and Administration for the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) where he was responsible for a budget of more than $100 million. Prior to his role with the DNCC, he was CFO for M2Z Networks, an innovative wireless services company focused on providing free, universal wireless broadband across the United States. Mr. Duffus has also held similar positions at other start-ups including Govolution, a leading provider of electronic payment software and services to the public sector and the banking industries. Duffus began his career at Goldman Sachs and has also worked for the family office of John Kluge at Metromedia Company.

Executive producer of Miss DC, grad student, former intern

Background:

Corey is a 2009 graduate of American University with a degree in vocal performance. In 2009 she was crowned Miss DC and finished top 10 at Miss America 2010. During her year of service, Corey served as the local ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network. She also worked with Goodwill of Greater Washington with her platform “Let’s Talk Trash”, which promoted recycling and reusing. In 2010 Corey was named one of MSNBC’s BLTWY ‘Top 40 Under 40 Who Changed DC’. Jen started as an intern at the J Street Group in 2010, and was employed as a project manager for the firm in 2012.

 Background:

 Molly Greenberg has a BA in Political Science and minor in Justice from American University. Prior to serving in the full-time Staff Writer position she currently holds at InTheCapital, Molly interned for the new-media site bent on reinventing how local news is disseminated, written, and perceived. She has experienced the intern life, written a number of articles on what modern day internships look like, and has repeatedly reported on the recent lawsuits filed by interns from Fox Searchlight, Gawker, etc. Molly is currently in the midst of producing a major content piece on the student loan crisis, a topic that directly impacts interns.  Background:

 Christopher Tremulis is an Associate Editor at Platts, a division of McGraw Hill Financial where he focuses on regulatory issues facing the swaps and futures derivatives markets. He is also responsible for covering the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the natural gas market. Christopher is a graduate of American University, where he participated in internships at the US Department of Energy, Dutko Worldwide a Capitol Hill lobbying firm and The Garnham Group LLC, a commodity hedge fund based in Chicago.

Background:

Ebonique Ellis, MSc University of Oxford, studied comparitive youth unemployment and is working on a research study discussing the impact of depressed wages on economic stability.  Ebonique has worked at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Offices, Foreign Policy Association, and with Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02).  She recently worked as a an advisor at West Virginia University to help place graduating students in competitive scholarships and graduate schools.

 Background:

 Holmes has held a number of paid and unpaid internships, most recently working for Edelman, a leading public relations firm. She is a graduate student at the Georgetown University School of Corporate Communications & Public Relations, and graduated from American University with a B.A. in Public Communications and a minor in Marketing.
