If you are looking for a place on your own, opting for a studio is great way to save on rent. There are a ton of studios out there and finding the right one can be tough. When many people think of studios, they think of tiny shoebox apartments. These do exist, so don’t get stuck in one. Here are some tips for finding the perfect studio apartment.

Square Footage:

To many this is an arbitrary number. I will admit that it is tough to visualize. My cardinal rule is to stay around the 500 mark and never go below 400. 500 square feet is considered a generously size studio. Anything below 400 will make you feel claustrophobic.

Kitchen:

Having a separate kitchen is key. I prefer studios that have a completely walled off kitchen. This does disrupt the flow of the space but the last thing you want to do is roll out of bed and step into a kitchen. If you fall in love with a place that has an open kitchen, work to create a separate space by adding an island or utilizing a decorative room divider.

Closet:

If you are going to get a studio, the least you can do is treat yourself to a beautiful walk-in closet. A walk-in closet is necessary in studios because it gives you a little bit of privacy. Without a separate dressing area, you may feel exposed.
