It appears the sale of Hubway’s operator, Alta Bicycle Share, won’t have immediate or dire consequences for the transportation service. In fact, Hubway announced that it plans to extend its winter service to include Boston, whereas last year it was only in Cambridge that cyclists were able to use Hubway bikes.

Benjy Kantor, Hubway’s marketing manager, confirmed with BostInno that many, “if not all,” Boston stations would be open until at least December. After that, though, given New England’s penchant for fickle weather, facilitation has yet to be determined.

Last year, Hubway closed down all of its Boston stations beginning on Thanksgiving and lasting through April 1. Kantor noted that Brookline and Somerville stations, which were also closed throughout the frigid months, will remain closed again this year.

“Safety of our staff and riders is always of utmost concern, so public messaging and email alerts with our members was made a priority in the case of system shutdowns and reopenings,” said Kantor. “Some station locations are or were licensed for only 3 seasons of the year, so negotiations by the municipalities planning to keep those stations open began earlier this year.”

Should Hubway opt to close its Boston stations in December, as it’s likely to do, they also plan on opening them back up come March, weather permitting.

Hubway riders have logged more than two million miles this year over one million combined rides, a tremendous feat considering that it took a solid two years to reach its first million rides. Proving that this perpetual increase in usage isn’t a regional matter, it was announced Seattle’s inaugural bike-share system logged 4,000 rides from 1,450 members in its first week. Hubway currently boasts 12,500 annual members, a huge boost from last year when ridership accounted for 9,500 people.

Kantor told us that Hubway will make a formal announcement on its winter operations with further details in November. Stay tuned.
